You Are Already Rich By $10000 On The Third Day Of The Year.

Give this a quick thought.

- Your association
- Your team
- Your tribe
- Your hot groups

It all boils down to who you hang out with.

I hardly picked up any projects last year as the focus was to work with new learners, find resources to team up with for larger projects, multiple pursuits and be part of a process that can be sustainable.

When you test frequencies, you actually waste your precious bandwidth on people

-      who are still on the lower edge of Maslow’s pyramid
-      who are easily distracted by consumerism and social media trends,
-      who prefer to talk about what they want to do in life, rather than do it
-      who have an excuse instead of a reason
-      who focus on what they cannot do instead of what they can
-      who prefer to spend their savings on materialism instead of investing on self-development

I have met people who are very excited about new projects however when there is a learning loop involved, you can see drastic change in attitude. I never quite understood how output or future achievements can change if input is the same.

-      No new learning
-      No new skills acquired
-      No new experience
-      No habit change
-      No reading
-      No ideas
-      No self-evaluation of what their goals and purpose of life is
-      No understanding about what they are capable of and their competence

If I conduct a seminar or a workshop today regarding work from home opportunities; online income; surveys; data entry jobs, telecommute options, remote assignments, laptop lifestyle – I will have the hall booked in a week’s time.

That is the first problem.

People invest roughly 25 years in education and then look for an income opportunity. How reasonable is it, in case of alternate income the expectation changes drastically when most participants look for immediate results, without efforts.

The following is definitely not enough to quantify your personal outcomes

-      Attending the workshop – Free or paid
-      Buying the reading / coaching material – Free or paid
-      Attending coaching sessions – Free or paid
-      Talking about the pursuit in a variety of excited tones – to self and others
-      Following instructions
-      Planning to do
-      Preparing things to do lists.

Most pursuits that are aimed for monetary benefits alone most often, in a sense of desperation, die a pre-mature death.

The key factor missing is -"Action" leading to desired outcomes

The sad truth is they consider everything they do - including surfing face book, watching YouTube, a marathon phone call with a friend as - "Action"

Based on that, they even begin to expect results without investing time in learning, changing inputs, habits or practicing.

Case Study 1

In March last year, I receive a message from a friend who urgently wanted 4/5 slides formatted by our virtual team during a weekend.

After I agreed, I realized due to an ongoing festival, the virtual team will be busy with their families or travelling to their home town, so I personally executed that task considering the urgency.

-      A month or two later they needed a pitch deck for their company
-      Then fleshing up an outline with researched content for speaking assignment
-      Then came the need for another presentation
-      Some research and data entry work was also done by the virtual team

Case Study 2

In January last year, two of my contacts bought my booklet and then referred two of their friends.

Illustration

Let us assume for illustration purpose the cost of these assignments is just $200

Now how many contacts do you have who are clueless about your skills and services who can be potential clients? They will thank you their whole life for your timely assistance during their crisis management.

That’s business and revenue waiting for you.

Quick Action

-      Check your social media currency
-      Even if 50 people require your services on an average for the same value $200 – you have $10000 to be tapped.

You probably love this idea and want to get started right away
You probably hate this idea and will be hunting for me for having proposed this.

Myth

Financial transactions and business with friends can be potentially dangerous – It may ruin relationships

Right!

If you take undue advantage of the their trust

Wrong!

If you think of their interest before you think of yours

So it all depends on you

Now read this blog all over again to get the key themes right

-      Learning
-  How will you change your inputs - skills, time, habits, association
-  Take action and practice

Just reading a blog will not get you started. You do not need a coach at this stage. You need a purpose, mind set and network.

Why Is Passive Income Important Today?

This is how the month has been so far for me:

May 1st - A friend of mine was interested to see the farmland I had booked in Kolkata, as she was keen to buy for herself and her sister. So, the day was planned accordingly.

The road we walked to reach the plot

May 9th – There was a cultural function in our residential complex to mark Rabindranath Tagore’s birthday. This cultural thing is kind of routine here and quite rich, for which we residents feel immense pride.

May 14th – My sister has a cook however on the occasion of Mother’s day she personally prepared two of my mother’s favorite dishes for lunch. Voila. It was a sister day too, as I had my share too.

In return I did a nice herbal facial massage for her. I find facial massage very stress relieving, when I apply the techniques on others. I am not a professional. I am just YouTube qualified and self-learnt based on keen observations when the professionals apply the same strokes on me. My sister is the most readily available guinea pig for my practice sessions. She loves it. I love it.

May 21st – I went to Big Bazaar for some grocery shopping in the afternoon with a friend who stays in the same residential complex and her daughter . Finally, that evening we saw Bahubali – the conclusion. Even after a month of its release, the audience (including kids) were roaring and whistling for Prabhas.

May 24th – Went to a local theater to watch Posto with my neighbor. I am a fan of Shiboprosad Mukherjee and Nandita Roy’s films after I saw Prakton featuring Bengal's two leading stars Prosenjit Chatterjee and Rituparna Sengupta after a gap of 15 years. How can one not mention the unforgettable Aparajita Adhya's role in that film?

I am glad even this movie on parenting and co-parenting met my expectations.

May 26th – I went to Calcutta Rowing Club to meet a friend from Bangalore and attend her brother’s wedding. The world is really small. I was taken off guard when I met two more friends there with whom I worked almost two decades back. It was such a pleasant surprise. Another good thing was, I found a new reliable driver and trust worthy car rental firm, close to my residence.

May 27th - My mother has to shop some gift for her grandson. I am her dedicated escort, keeping her seniority in view.

May 28th – Hopefully will see Fera, a play by the legend Soumitra Chatterjee in Sukanto Sadan – subject to ticket availability though

May 31st – Do we have plans for Jamai Sasthi? Sure we do.

The month really went quick. It was busy otherwise, not work wise. The only work I did this month was to create a startup checklist for a particular industry for a US Client.

What is the whole point now - Why would I capture these inputs here instead of my personal diary?
When you live on transaction based earnings by trading time for money, you have to be active all the time - If you do not work, you obviously do not get paid. The entity that transfers your salary  to your bank account buys your time, skills, loyalty, intellect with that pay check - month after month, year after year, decade after decade

The Beginner's Guide I launched roughly a year back to assist new comers establish online income is going through an enormous transformation now. I am seeking feedback from those who used it, asking for their expectations and suggestions so that this version is loaded with more actionable items to achieve outcomes faster.

The content is already over 100 pages now which was just half in its first version.

Why am I working of this?
  • People buy when they are ready to establish an alternative income
  • People use it in bits and pieces even when there is no immediate crisis or urgent need to get used to the self-learning model that the book strongly stands for
  • Some got results within the first month while some are still in learning phase
  • The future of work is virtual, remote, distributed and based on telecommuting. With robots, automation, artificial intelligence and mass layoff or up-skill initiative more and more people will feel the axes soon and understand the growing need - why passive earnings are so much more important than active income?
What has the guide got to do with my diary inputs? Though it seems like I had a long vacation this month, the point is while the world was busy with their regular active income, I was investing my efforts in a different stream - my passive income.

I will leave you with a few questions to ponder on:
  • What are you doing today to build your passive income?
  • How many hours do you invest to get started on your passive income?
  • What are your learning gaps?
  • How does your diary look like today - Is it all work and no play? Is is all about active income
  • Are you still stuck with M&M (Managers and Meetings)?
Let the unlearning begin.

What Do You Trade To Make A Living?

I had 46K EMI when I quit my corporate job.

In the cafeteria, my colleagues voiced their concerns and tried to counsel me – the same lot who attended my house warming party a few months back and knew about my ongoing EMIs. They meant well and wanted me to quit after I had an alternative offer/ steady income.

That was three years back.

I sailed through and I am happy with the ride so far.

One afternoon, I tried to make the balcony, a cool working place.
I had to drop the idea as it was so windy outside

There are few things I built in the last four years.

Year 1 – The Concept:  What is the learning model (I worked on this before I quit my job)
Year 2 – The Conviction: Will this learning model work and how will this work?
Year 3 – The Clientele: How to increase clients based on one skill/ service?
Year 4 – The Coaching: Is there a way to establish multiple income streams based on one skill?

I had each of following as my target audience when I created my booklet that provides step by step instruction to readers how to go and fetch clients in whatever they are good at and enjoy doing - cartoons, voice over, business planning, virtual assistance, blogging, designing, seriously anything.

Solopreneurs trying to build their personal brand and create a market for their portfolio/ skills
Mompreneurs who are balancing dual roles of mom and entrepreneur
Employees in mid management aspiring to be entrepreneurs or planning a personal franchisee.
Startup companies who are still struggling with cash flow and cannot afford full time employees, seeking experts in various fields.
Students in business schools who need not wait for their internship to understand real time business situations.

The  challenge is only in dealing with habitual thinking patterns and the personality that dominates the learner, while the learning process is in progress.

Based on BECKON framework, the booklet is a beginner's guide for anyone keen to address these issues, begin the unlearning process and establish alternative incomes/ interests.

It is your call what you want to trade - time or skill.

How do those ongoing EMIs  get handled?

The very first mental shift that you will require is to stop thinking pay check to pay check and begin thinking annual business revenue or at least quarterly revenue.

I worked back to back on assignments in July-August and took three months off Sept - Oct - Nov. That has been my working style ever since I had that mental shift.  In fact, I am even writing this blog after ages.

With just one skill - creating business plans/ content strategy and with over 50 international clients, I have absolute control on my time. Recently a buyer had to wait for 6 days for just one slide (Case Study) as he happened to give me that assignment in those three months when I was off.

Power of Duplication

The booklet is just comprehensive way of telling those who ask me what I do and if they can do it too? Instead of coaching 10 people and spending hours to bring them up the curve, it is always a better idea to guide interested people to self learning option by sharing the beginner's guide.

Do Your Mathematics

There is a detail calculation in the booklet how one can build this. Your financial need can be very different from mine and so you work on your revenue, time-skill-rate quotient accordingly.

As a startup enthusiast, I support startups. I found my niche in the market place. You?

Early Retirement From Corporate Will Soon Be The New Normal

Just before my birthday a couple of years back, I rent out my city apartment in Bangalore and moved to my new abode in the outskirts – away from active city life and the maddening hustle bustle.

View from my Village Home

A year after that, I abandoned my corporate status. The idea was sabbatical, rejuvenation, soul searching; community initiative, traveling India, multiple visits to my home town or whatever the thought that was lingering in my mind then- is beside the point now. I wanted to explore more. Period!
A few months before settling to my laid back life style in the semi urban zone, I wrapped up my clothes boutique that was operational for over five years – much to the disappointment of my clients and retailers across the two cities I frequented – Home and work place.
I did not look at my bank statements to assure myself how long I can afford this luxury. I had a vague outline though, a rough draft in my mind regarding what I need to do next – Not to step foot in that corridor again that lead to a machine to punch your arrival and departure. I was done with daily time frames, for life.
Today, when I am strolling through a fair in Kolkata and shopping handicrafts on a weekday or boarding an early morning train for a spontaneous trip to Mayapur, it raises a few brows. They wonder if I am still in that travel mode, reckless and irresponsible about my finances and future.

Talking about finances and future reminds me to mention, recently when a relative visited us with his family, his daughter working for a leading IT company casually commented about how her father’s buying habits had drastically changed after retirement - the most natural thought that crossed my mind was – even after four decades of service there is no financial security to afford an occasional spending urge. Financial literacy is really not everyone’s cup of tea.
While I assist others explore income options both through our NGO and my paid programs, exploit their potential, and discover additional earning streams just the way I developed mine, what I do check at the very outset is their financial literacy.
Most of us are conditioned to live with one source of income almost all our lives, without the slightest inclination to even consider alternatives or dare to be unconventional about livelihood. Little do they realize that it is this dependence on one option that limits them, leading to stress and burnout. Some success areas, no matter how fast you reach are just points of no return.
So you see I am doing a little more than just traveling. All I did was switch my security factor, a conscious shift from job centric to income stream centric to make the most of both – time and life
Should you encounter me in Oxford bookstore in Park Street, on a beach in Pondicherry or cycling through lanes in Barrackpore, it will look like just that – I am still on vacation. Yes I am and No I am not. Confusing eh?
